OHIO MID-WESTERN SHUT OUT BY KENTUCKY WESLEYAN IN SEASON FINALE
Short-handed Rams no match for Division 2 varsity squad in 44-0 loss

Five turnovers doomed Ohio Mid-Western College, as the Rams fell, 44-0, to Division II Kentucky Wesleyan’s varsity team Saturday night at Steele Stadium in Owensboro, Ky.

The Rams held the Panthers to 10 points over the first 20 minutes, but Kentucky Wesleyan scored three touchdowns on six offensive plays over the final 8:44 of the second quarter to break the game open.

Dalton Oliver hit Keelan Cole for a 63-yard touchdown on Kentucky Wesleyan’s first offensive snap, but the Rams stopped the Panthers on downs on their next possession and limited them to a 27-yard field goal on their third.

Kentucky Wesleyan intercepted two passes, however, with Oliver hitting Xavier Mitchell for a 63-yard touchdown pass immediate after the first and Roger Beets for a 19-yard score two plays after the second.

In between, the Panthers scored on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Oliver to Beets that was set up by a 62-yard punt return by Mitchell.

Kentucky Wesleyan added two more scores in the third quarter, a 27-yard pass from Oliver to Cole, and a 6-yard run by Brian Thomas, before the game was called after three quarters by mutual agreement of both coaches.

The Rams best scoring threat came late in the second quarter, when freshman Lance Johnson returned a kickoff 48 yards and sophomore quarterback Sam Williams hit freshman receiver Semaj Steele with a 49-yard pass to the Wesleyan 3 yard line.  Cole Woodburn intercepted a pass to end the drive on third-and-goal.

Steele finished with 110 total yards, 65 on two catches and 45 on three kick returns.  He also recorded four tackles as a cornerback on defense with one pass breakup and one forced fumble.

Steele was one of several Rams to play both ways.  The game was added after the originally scheduled conclusion of the Ohio Mid-Western season, and several players missed the contest with other commitments.

Freshman linebacker Raphel Boyce led the defense with 10 tackles, six solo, with 2.5 tackles for a loss.  Senior linebacker Terrance Shipmon added eight tackles, 2.5 for a loss, senior defensive back DeMario Pleasant seven, and junior linebacker Howard Tidwell six.  Senior lineman Josh Davis and freshman lineman Quinton Smith shared in a sack.

Oliver completed 17 of 28 passes for 326 yards and five touchdowns for Kentucky Wesleyan.  Cole had six catches for 132 yards and two scores and Mitchell had five catches for 138 yards and one touchdown.

USA Football Network, Inc. is proud to publish its 2nd USA College Football USCAA Pre-Season All-American Teams that are selected by a national panel including Head Coaches, Sports information Directors, members of the Football Writers Association of America, Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association, New England Football Writers Association and Philadelphia Football Writers, pro football scouts plus staff journalists of Lindey’s Sports Annuals, The Sports Network and USA Football News.

Following is the direct link to the roster of USCAA Pre-Season All-Americans

http://www.usacollegefootball.org/14USCAA.htm

Dennis Wilson, serving his 24th term as President of the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association, the senior member of the Division III Gagliardi Trophy selection panel and an adjunct professor in graduate schools of Sports Administrations, is the President and CEO of USA Football Network, Inc. The firm is compliant with NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA and USCAA regulations and its mission since its founding in 1988 has been to produce football-reporting services as well as events that produce national and regional recognition of the college football industry.

USAFBN created the USA Football Bowl in 1995 as the original Division III Senior All-Star Game with the legendary Ron Schipper (Central-IA) and Paul Guenther (Ursinus-PA), now the Defensive Coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, serving as the head coaches. The USA Football Bowl Festival evolved with the addition of the Division II Cactus Bowl in 2010 and added NAIA, Division I-AA (FCS) and Division I-A (CFB) programs in 2012. It ranks No. 3 behind the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl in longevity and is played on the national MLK Holiday, sandwiched between the two older events. Traditionally, the USA College Football Banquet takes place on the eve of the game at which College Division awards named in honor of former gridiron standouts are presented to outstanding Division II, Division III, NAIA, NCCAA and USCAA position players of the year, legendary coaches as well as recognizing distinguished football administrators and media standouts .
